Tony Cano can't pick up a bass guitar, let alone play it. To him, the instrument symbolizes the years of abuse he suffered at the hands of the man who taught him to play: his priest.

Cano, 46, was one of 33 people who reached a $35 million settlement Wednesday with the Catholic Diocese of Sacramento over sexual abuse by clergy.

The Catholic Diocese of Sacramento's agreement to pay $35 million to settle 33 claims of sexual abuse by priests closes one of the darkest chapters in diocesan history, with both sides saying they are moving forward.

Bishop William Weigand, spiritual leader of the diocese, said he would like to meet with the victims and apologize to them on behalf of the church. Attorneys had advised him not to meet with the plaintiffs until litigation ended.
