Why Sex Therapy Is Important for Abuse Survivors

In our prior post, we highlighted some of the reasons why sex abuse victims develop or maintain destructive habits, basically masking the shame or pain they hold from the attack. Because of this, therapy is key in their recovery. Sometimes it may be for alcoholism or anger issues, but invariably sex therapy is needed sex abuse survivors.

Healing in this regard can be empowering. This post will identify a few of the benefits.

Increasing self esteem – Survivors of sex abuse often think of themselves as less than worthy human beings. Sex therapy can increase a person’s view of their self worth and help them discover the benefits of sex in a safe, genuine relationship.

Create new meanings for sex – It is not uncommon for survivors to view sex as a source of pain or manipulation. After all, it was probably used to get the survivor to believe that no one would love or believe them. Therapy can help in learning new meanings with regard to expressions of love and intimacy.

How to handle negative sexual behaviors – As we alluded to earlier, engaging in compulsive or dangerous behaviors can block sexual recovery or even lead to more destructive behavior.

Educate partners – Recovery is rarely achieved alone. A person’s current significant other or spouse must understand what the victim is going through in order to be truly supportive.

If you have additional questions about sex therapy and why it is important for abuse survivors, an experienced attorney and counselor can advise you.
